From now on, Sagada’s annual town fiesta will be called “Etag Festival!”
This year, the festival starts on January 29 to February 1 with the theme “Nurturing our Common Origin amidst Converging Cultures.”
The term “etag” (preserved salted-smoked pork) was adopted per Resolution No. 04-2011 of the Sangguniang Bayan (SB) strengthening its commitment “to preserve and maintain the genuine and intact traditional practices of the municipality.”Hon. Kapon Gomgom-o authored the resolution.
The fiesta officially starts on the evening of the 28th day of January with the PNP Band concert at 7:00 P.M. at the community court.
On the following day, the Ribbon Cutting ceremony of the Etag Festival and Coffee Cupping will take place at 7:30 A.M. A parade will follow from Dao-angan to the softball ground below the Saint Mary the Virgin Church in which ground demonstrations by the different elementary and secondary schools will happen. There will be cultural presentations in the afternoon followed by a dog walk and an Ethnic Music concert & song writing contest in the community court to end the day.
In the morning of the second day, there will be a mass followed by the Etag Documentation, Coffee Cupping (Booth games and sports). The whole afternoon will consist of various games and sports. In the evening, there will be a coronation for the Miss Teen Sagada.
On day three, ball games and individual games such as Dashes, Shot-put, Damath, Chess and Marathon will commence at 8:00 A.M until the evening. Ballroom dancing and Benefit dancing at the Saint Mary’s School Gym is open to all at 7:00 P.M.
Quiz Bees per school and Essay Writing contest in the secondary division will take place at 7:30 A.M to start the fourth day of the town fiesta. This will be followed by games and sports. There will be a Wushu presentation after these events. On the evening, a Candle Procession attended by Servers, Clergy, Vestry, ECW’s from different barangays, BSA and the Sagada community will happen.
On the last day of the Sagada Town Fiesta 2011, a Mass Service will commemorate the five day fiesta followed by Games and Sports, Tug-of-war, Literary Musical Contest and the awarding of prizes as the last event for this year’s town fiesta.
For the Sain’t Mary’s School varsity teams, there will be no games on day one. However there will be three games that they will participate in the following day. SMS will play against Saint James High School in Game 1 of the volleyball boys at the Tennis Court near the Kindergarten. The volleyball girls will be playing on Game 5 against the same school. For the basketball boys, they will play against Antadao National High School in Game 1 on the SMS Gym. The softball girls will play on the 4th day against the Sagada National High School on the third game.
