"Listen to the typhoon and create music."

- Sir Dennis Faustino

Despite the strong winds and heavy rains, the Music Workshop pushed through.

Participants from the different districts of Mountain Province braved Typhoon Mina just to attend the Music Workshop held at the Auditorium of Saint Mary’s School of Sagada on August 27-30, 2011.

Headmaster of SMSS and All Saints Mission Elementary School (ASMES) and National Consultant for the Department of Education (DepED) in Music, facilitated the workshop together with Ms. Teresa Salao, Principal of Antadao Elementary School, and Ms. Lissa Octaviano, SMSS Kindergarten and Music Teacher.

Ms. Christina Semon, Principal of Ambasing Elementary School, was the Division Liaison and Administrative Manager of the workshop.

Forty participants showed up. One came from Natonin, two from Barlig, three each from Besao, Sadanga and Bauko, thirteen from Bontoc, and fifteen from Sagada. Other participants were not able to make it because of the typhoon.

Faculty members and staff, including students, of SMSS joined and at the same time catered the workshop.

As stated in the Workshop Handout; “the idea of conducting a music workshop was originally conceived by the Division Superintendent, Dr. Mary Lang-ayan, to address the need of public school teachers to effectively teach the subject and inculcate a love of and appreciation for music among our students.”

“A survey among the teaching community was conducted and several concerns were raised by the respondents. For one, teachers feel insecure and inadequate to talk about or teach students a subject in which they have no expertise. Secondly, because teachers feel that they had not been properly trained in music, or because they are not “singers” or “musicians,” they avoid learning more about the subject. “

“Thirdly, they hold on to many misconceptions about the subject and its value to daily life, music is regarded as a time “filler,” so much so that they become complacent in merely following the prescribed curriculum without effectively imparting the understanding of the subject, emphasizing its value, and developing a passion for it among our young students.”

“It is therefore the intent of this workshop to simplify the concepts of music for teachers, to develop an appreciation for the subject, and equip them with the necessary basic knowledge and strategies to be effective.”

“The workshop is a review of basic music concepts: music as a form of communication and cultural expression, its basic elements (melody, rhythm, harmony), and its forms, symbols, and notations.”

The teachers were trained to read, write, and apply simple music notations to a degree that they can teach the melody of a song.

Included in the workshop is a brief introduction of music history and music literature to enable high school teachers to teach music appreciation which is the thrust of music education in the high school level.

The initial module of the workshop was focused on curriculum mapping. The teachers went over the new K-12 standards and competencies for music that have been developed by the DepEd National Office for full implementation by 2016.

The workshop is a joint project of the DepEd Mt. Province Division, DepEd Sagada District, St. Mary’s School of Sagada, Inc., and ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. through its E-Media Program. #   by Melvin Magsanoc
