Shyness can mean feeling uncomfortable, self-conscious, nervous, bashful, timid, or insecure. People who feel shy sometimes notice physical sensations like blushing or feeling speechless, shaky, or breathless.

Shyness is the opposite of being at ease with one’s self around others. When people feel shy, they might hesitate to say or do something because they're feeling unsure of themselves and they're not ready to be noticed.

New and unfamiliar situations can bring out shy feelings – like the first day of school, meeting someone new or speaking in front of a group for the first time. People are less likely to feel shy when they are around familiar people and that they know what to expect.

The 1st year students quickly adapted to the school’s environment within the first two months of this school year. This is mainly because they feel comfortable in the school’s environment. It is because they do not feel inferior to their “manongs” and “manangs”. A feeling to belongingness to the SMSS family gave the 1st year students confidence to be themselves and not to be hindered by shyness.

It was a quick transition and they overcame their shyness faster compared to some of the current students who are still shy. As I observe different classes and go with them in their classes, I see there are still 2nd and 3rd year students who are still not over their shyness. There are some who can’t speak loudly and clearly when asked by the teacher. Some are affected by mental blocking because of nervousness. These things mainly come out during class presentations wherein an audience is present. On the other hand, their classmates are confident, easy-going and they are comfortable speaking out.

It's no wonder that people who stay away from socialization don't feel as confident as people who are outgoing — they have less practice! The more you practice social behaviors, the easier they get, and the easier your friends will get along with you. Build confidence by taking one small forward step at a time, go slow but be sure to go forward too and not stick back. Lastly is to have the self-confidence that you can overcome shyness. It feels much better when your shyness gets rid off, you can move around freely and can enjoy doing the things you love doing without feeling awkward and uneasy. Plenty of people learn to manage their shyness. Know that you can do it too!
