A manang or a manong. An ate or a kuya. An elder sister or an elder brother. Someone to talk to. Someone to look up to. Someone you could trust. Someone you could smile and have fun with. Someone you could sit and just talk to without holding anything back. A friend. That’s us, YOUR SENIORS.
As I write this, I know I speak for all fourth years. For three years, we’ve been looking up on our manongs and manangs. But this time, we look down, not to be superior but to help our “adings” climb up the levels of their high school life. We are bending to down to extend a helping hand.
When we were still on the lower years, we would always look at our seniors. We would always criticize any bad thing they do saying, “Ay inyan pay sa, fourth year pay met.” We had a lot of expectations from them. But now that we are on their places, we need to carry out those expectations.
The seniors last year had a lot of accomplishments. First, they were able to achieve a higher average on the NCAE exam compared to the previous batch’. Second, they sound great as a choral group. Furthermore, they were able to impress the audience during the National Science Quiz Bee conducted at St. Joe last year with their outstanding rendering of “Voices That Care.” Also, it was always a fourth year class that topped the English rule. They never had to wear uniform on Mondays. These are just some of their accomplishments which serve as their legacy; a legacy that the seniors this year should sustain and even go beyond.
This year, there’s this program of the SGO called the manang/manong-ading system. This system makes up the ratio of one senior is to one freshman. The main purpose of this partnership is for the senior to help the freshman in all his activities, and the freshman to also help the senior in any way he/she can. So, basically, this is the time where senior fosters a freshman as his/her own brother for his/her benefit, either in school or outside the school. This program will be the first challenge for the seniors.
I call upon all the seniors. Make those “kids” of yours be the best batch of freshmen that has ever step foot on St. Mary’s School!
