Saint Mary’s School of Sagada

Principal’s Bulletin, 2011-2012 Series # 9

October 11, 2011

Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends:

It is good to be back after a week of absence in our school. I attended the Principals’ Training on Instructional Supervision at Calauan, Laguna which was conducted by Sir Faustino for Calauan elementary school principals on September 26-30. The training was sponsored by ABS-CBN Foundation. I’m blessed to have been accommodated in this first of a series of training for administrators especially that seminars are rarely given to administrators unlike teachers.

During the training, we discussed the best teaching practices and common issues that we face in administration. We had a one-day observation at Oscar M. Lopez Dayap Elementary School (OMLDES), the school within the resettlement area of ABS-CBN and National Housing Authority (NHA) with the purpose of honing our observation skills. I am happy to note that the culture of student-centered instruction is established in the school and the students are disciplined and respectful in spite of the fact that they came from the different squatter areas of Metro Manila. According to the principals, there is a big improvement in what they saw during our observation as compared last year during their regular observation schedules. The children are now more focused on their studies as compared last year. I congratulate the OMLDES teachers for making a difference in the lives of these children. My appreciation also goes to the effort of Mr. Dennis Faustino, our Headmaster and the Education Consultant of ABS-CBN Foundation, and our faculty members who had been facilitating workshops for Calauan teachers for three years now.

Prior to the principals’ training was the Workshop on Student-centered Instruction on September 22-24 which was facilitated by Sir Fau together with our SMS faculty members Mr. Melvin Magsanoc and Ms. Gay Pascual. It was held in OMLDES. There were 75 teacher participants from the different public elementary schools of Calauan. The majority of the participants were from ABS-CBN adopted schools which are OMLDES and Santo Tomas Elementary School. Mr. Rosendo Cacap, MAPEH Supervisor of Mountain Province, is part of the team. Ms. Pascual and Mr. Magsanoc then went home to Sagada on September 25 which was also the time that I joined Sir Fau and Mr. Cacap for the principals’ training.

I’m grateful to Mrs. Racquel Domanog-Killy, the teacher-in-charge, and the faculty and staff members for overseeing our students in our absence with all the activities and disruptions last week. Thank you for holding the fort.

PAST EVENTS

We had the parent-student-conference for the second quarter on September 19 – 21. The students compared their tentative 2nd quarter grades to their final first quarter grades. They also came up with a plan of action to further improve their second quarter grades. To the parents, thank you for attending the conferences.

We had the first intramurals on September 22-24. We started with a parade from the school gate to the quadrangle followed by the opening program where the different dap-ays presented their cheer dance. The kinder children showed the kinder march and danced to the music “…. nobody nobody but you!” After the oath of sportsmanship, lighting of the intramural torch, and the solidarity circle, Mr. Daniel Ambasing, formally opened the intramurals. The games played were volleyball, basketball, chess, and table tennis. Congratulations goes to Dap-ay Malingeb for garnering the highest point! Dap-ay Losban followed closely. Dap-ay Matoba and Dap-ay Bilig are third and fourth respectively. There will be another intramurals towards the end of the school year which will be focused on batted balls.

The SMS volleyball team was invited during the barangay fiesta of Bangaan on September 25. They won in their game against Bangaan National High School. Our basketball team was also invited in the barangay fiesta of Kayan, Tadian last Saturday, October 8, and they won in the game against Holy Rosary High School. Congratulations to both teams!

The National Career Assessment Examination was scheduled on September 28. However, we cancelled classes as we were under typhoon signal number 3 (Typhoon Pedring). We administered the exam the following day, September 29, with Mr. Arthur Dagacan and Mrs. Emilia Soliba as proctors. There was a directive from the regional office that the NCAE will be administered at the same time in all schools on October 7 however we received the message late. Mr. Daniel Ambasing and Mr. Glen Gayagay, on the other hand, administered the test at Bangaan National High School last Friday.

On September 29 (Thursday), speakers from the National Statistics Office (NSO) oriented our 4th and 5th year students on the importance of civil registration for an hour. Parents, if there is a problem with the registration of your children, please find time to visit the NSO office in Bontoc so it will be addressed earlier.

The District Meet was scheduled on September 30 – October 2. However, the games were cancelled due to heavy rains brought by Typhoon Quiel. The games were continued on October 8 and 9; however there are still unfinished games particularly in batted balls. Players, please wait for the schedule of your games. As of now, our basketball team still has to play with Antadao National High School for championship. Our volleyball boys team tied with Antadao National High School for the first place as per officilas’ decision rather than to have another game. Although our volleyball girls were eliminated on the second day, they demonstrated teamwork and sportsmanship.

FUTURE EVENTS

We will host the District Math and Science Festival for the high school category on Saturday, October 15. We will join the elimination on Sudoku only. We decided not to join the other events as our students have to prepare for the second quarter exams first before other things.

The schedule of the second quarter exams is moved to October 17 (Monday) and 18 (Tuesday) instead of the original schedule which is Thursday and Friday this week due to a lot of distractions during the past weeks. As such, moratorium on all after school started on Monday. Parents, please monitor if your children passed all academic requirements in order to avoid failing grades this quarter. You may also come to talk to the teachers.

The E-Media department of the ABS-CBN Foundation will have their strategic planning here in our school on October 17-19. They are expected to arrive in the afternoon of October 16, Sunday, and depart on October 20, Thursday. Sir Fau, our Headmaster, will facilitate their sessions being the Education Consultant of the Foundation. We have been a recipient of the Foundation during the past four years and we are blessed that they formally adopted us in their education programs. Through the Foundation’s assistance, we were able to hold trainings not only for our teachers but also for the teachers of Mountain Province, Betty Go Belmonte Elementary School in Quezon City, and the teachers of Calauan, Laguna. Three years ago, the Foundation donated Sineskwela DVDs, 29-inch TV, and dictionaries to all elementary schools of Sagada. The assistance was also extended to other schools in the division. They also helped Ambasing Elementary School for the past three years and they are now helping All Saints Mission Elementary School, our sister school in Bontoc.

PTA Meeting: There will be a PTA meeting on October 22, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon. The topics will be our participation in the Festival of the Arts, Festival of the Sciences in November, parenting workshop and youth camp, and the updates on the K + 12 program.

Sagada will host the division level of the Festival of the Arts on October 23-26. The venue of the activities will be at SMS. The festival will start in the afternoon of October 23, Sunday, and will end with a celebration of talents in the evening of October 25 (Wednesday). Aside from the competition, the participants will have workshops in art, music and cultural dancing. Those who won’t make it to the final competitions can further hone their skills in the workshops. This makes it different from the other competitions. During the last evening there will presentations from the orchestra of Saint Scholastica College, the SMS choir, and theDep-Ed Division Choir.

We will expect around 700 participants from the whole division. Sagada National High School, Sagada Central School, and Ambasing Elementary School will house the participants while Saint Mary’s School will house the guests and the judges.

There will be no registration fee during the festival. The delegates will take care of their food. However, they will have free dinner on the 25th. It was agreed during the meeting of the working committees and the school heads of the four host schools that the PTA of SMS, SNHS, SCS, and AES will be in charge of cooking the dinner on the last day, October 25. ABS-CBN Foundation will shoulder the expenses in the workshops.

We will have a parenting workshop for SMS parents and youth camp for SMS students on October 28-30 in school. As this falls during the semestral break, it is optional to our students although we strongly encourage them to join. The main facilitator is the youngest brother of Sir Fau who is a family counselor. He will come with his team. We are grateful that they are able to find time to be with us to share tips on how to handle our children whose environment are very different from ours before.

Mid-year Break: The mid-year break is from October 26 to November 6. We expect one hundred percent attendance when we resume classes on November 7, Monday.

SMSS Board Meeting: The second quarter BOT meeting is scheduled on October 30 after the sung mass. It will be held in Room 11 here in our school.
