Saint Mary’s School of Sagada
Principal’s Bulletin, 2011-2012 Series # 10
October 25, 2011
Dear Parents, Students, Alumni, and Friends:
Gawis ay agew tako am-in!
Today is the last day of the Mountain Province Festival of the Arts for the school year 2011. It started on Sunday afternoon, October 23, and it will culminate tonight with a torchlight parade starting from Dao-angan to the SMS gymnasium. Upon reaching the gym all the participants will dance before the closing ceremonies. The SMS Choir, Dep-Ed Mountain Province Choir, and the NAMCYA Cultural Troupe provincial representative which is Dalican Elementary School will entertain us tonight. The winners will be announced and those who won in the cultural dance and choir for both elementary and high school categories will perform their piece again. At the end all the music participants including the SMS choir will sing the grand finale songs. Everybody is invited to watch the torch parade and the closing ceremonies.
Unlike other competitions in the division level, the Festival of the Arts has three components: the workshops, the competitions, and the art exhibits. There were workshops in music, cultural dance and art during the past days. Sir Fau handled the music workshops. The music participants learned the three grand finale songs: We are the Young, The First Noel/Pachelbel’s Canon in D, and We Can Make a Difference. Jane Eason, our Art teacher, conducted the art workshops with the aid of our Art Elective students, Mrs. Christina Aben, Dra. Clare Lalwet, and Miriam Daoas. Daisylyn Conyap Tauli, Julius Daguitan and Brenda Fuchay facilitated the cultural dance workshop for high school. These provide opportunities for the participants to further hone their skills making all participants winners whether they win or lose in the competitions.
The participants competed in the following areas for both elementary and secondary: choir, cultural dance, and art. The winners will represent our province in the regional level. To the winners, raise the banner of Mountain Province during the regional event. Kaya ninyo iyan!
The districts brought some of the art works of their students for exhibit during the festival. The purpose of this is to recognize the talent of our students in art. We reserved eight classrooms for the art exhibit however; few districts brought the works of their students. We hope that all the districts will cooperate next year.
There is free dinner this evening to all participants and to the SMSS students. Please bring your utensils and cooked rice. The meat dish will be served in the quadrangle. This was made possible through the donation of Sir Fau, Mayor Eduardo Latawan, and the provincial government who donated one pig each. The provincial government also donated rice and pork to the different districts to help them defray their expenses during their stay here. ABS-CBN sponsored the art materials and other expenses incurred during the festival. The art participants then will bring home the art materials they used during the competition.
The Journalism class and the staff of the Sagada Postboy, our school organ, under the tutelage of Mr. Melvin Magsanoc are covering the event. They are tasked to come up with a newsletter at the end of the festival which they will run this evening. Please get your copies tomorrow from them before you go home particularly the participants of the festival.
There were around 600 registered participants and coaches. All the districts were represented although there are some districts that did not bring their students in some areas. We housed the high school participants of Paracelis. Sagada National High School housed Barlig, Tadian 1 and Tadian 2. Sagada Central School housed the participants of Sabangan, Sadanga, Natonin, and Bontoc while Ambasing Elementary School housed Bauko 1, Bauko 2 and some participants from Bontoc. This is the second time Sagada hosted the Festival of the Arts.
I congratulate the SMS PTA, faculty and staff for working harmoniously in organizing the workshops, competitions, exhibits, and program during these past days. Special thanks to the PTA and faculty members of Ambasing Elementary School, Sagada National High School, and Sagada Central School for housing the delegates. We would also like to thank the Sagada LGU, the Provincial Government, DepEd Division Office, the judges, the facilitators, to all students of St. Mary’s School and to all unnamed individuals for making this Division Festival of the Arts a success!
PAST EVENTS
Our friends from the E-Media of ABS-CBN had their planning retreat here in school on October 17-19. There were 25 out of 28 personnel who came here. During the first day, we had the opportunity to thank them for all the things they did for SMS and Sagada. Cyprene Lay-at and Neil Bagano represented the student body. They shared their experiences in ABS-CBN Foundation sponsored activities such as the Festival of the Arts and the Journalism class field trip in Umagang Kay Ganda, Showtime and Philippine Star. Melvin Magsanoc and Gay Pascual shared how their production, Sineskwela and others, helped them in their elementary years. They also shared how they were able to move from being mere teachers to becoming trainors of teachers through the opportunities given by the foundation. I agree with them, through ABS-CBN Foundation we are now known as a teacher training institution not only to ABS-CBN sponsored schools but also to the teachers of Mountain Province.
The group had planning for two full days and then on the third day they paid a visit the division superintendent and All Saints Mission Elementary School, the newest ABS-CBN sponsored school. They also visited schools in Sabangan and were treated by Dep-Ed with a lunch by the river. They went to the cave and toured Sagada in the afternoon. In the evening they learned cultural dances with our dance troupe and the teachers.
During their stay here, the science teachers and administrators of Sagada District had a chance to talk to Claudette Sevilla, the program director of E-Media, regarding the Festival of the Sciences which will be held in November. Details of the Festival of the Sciences will be published in the next bulletin.
I’d like to extend my appreciation to our students who worked hard to prepare our school campus for the Festival of the Arts and for cleaning the road going to the cemetery in preparation for the All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day.
Congratulations to the Blue Flames basketball team for winning in the championship game against Antadao National High School last Sunday. The score is 52-31. SMS then will represent Sagada in the provincial meet in December.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
We had the second quarter exams last October 17 and 18. We will release the report cards to the parents in November. The recognition of honors will also be in November.
Semester break starts tomorrow, October 26, until November 7, Monday. We are supposed to come back on November 7 however this is declared a regular holiday throughout the country by Malacanang through Proclaimation No. 276 in observance of Eidul Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) which is one of the two greatest feasts of Islam. To the students: Enjoy the break. Make the most of it. However, please be reminded that school rules apply. Since the public schools enter on November 3 I expect one hundred percent attendance of students on November 8. Anybody who will be absent has to come to school on a Saturday to study at the library. Parents please make it possible for your children to attend classes on November 8.
During the PTA meeting last Saturday, we talked about the family encounter which is scheduled during the break. Please note that the workshop will be on October 29 (Saturday) and 30 (Sunday) morning instead of October 28-29. As the second day is Sunday, please attend the early morning mass instead of the high mass. It will be held at the school auditorium. The team of facilitators is headed by Gary Faustino, a family counselor and the youngest brother of Sir Fau. They will arrive in Sagada on October 27. They need a day of rest and preparation before the workshop. Parents, as what we announced during the PTA meeting it is required that you come together with your children who are students of SMS. I urge everybody to attend this rare opportunity to learn more about parenting and at the same time strengthen our bond with our children. Please note also that we will have potluck for the snacks and lunch on the first day.
DATES TO REMEMBER:
October 26 – November 7 Semester Break
October 29-30 (Saturday and Sunday) Family Encounter
November 8 Classes resume
‘Till next bulletin.
