This year the new era of the SMS Baseball Team begins. After sometime of waiting for a coach, SMS engaged Coach Daren Sauyen. During the Club Exposition a generous number of baseball applicants showed up. This gave me the idea that the students are really interested in playing baseball this year.
During the previous years the SMS Baseball Team didn’t have consistent trainings and though the team joined competitions, it didn’t really made records. This is because we lacked a permanent coach through those years. Last year a baseball team was formed by the student body and they had hoped for an active baseball season. In spite of their readiness, the Baseball Team was not able to move forward due to the lack of a coach. Surely, what is the use of a team without a coach and a coach without a team?
Other than the lack of a coach, the students themselves were not committed into it. Some players signed up in other sports like basketball or volleyball. I think that these players signed up in double events because they fear losing and only want to win.
Baseball for me is a game of mistakes. We just have to practice hard enough as a team to lessen mistakes. And after we have lessened these mistakes, eventually they will translate to winning the games we play. The rebirth of the Blue Flames Baseball Team has come, and it is better late than never. # By Dwight Cager Astudillo
